COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will give the student an opportunity to review concepts from life science and physical science and learn new concepts related to today's biology. It will also give them an opportunity to develop new and creative solutions to biological problems.

 

COURSE BENCHMARKS:

1. Solve problems using the scientific procedure.

2. Classify living things.

3. Explore the complex issues of biology.

4. Distinguish between low risk and high risk living styles.

5. Explain where and how three life processes take place.

6. Determine the probability that an offspring will have certain characteristics

7. Show the class how to perform basic life support.

A. Organize objects into groups based upon their similarities and differences.

Benchmark 3: Explore the complex issues of biology.

A. Understand different points of view.

B. Compare different theories of origin of life on this planet.

C. Assemble models of cells.

D. Investigate how development of medical science has affected the life of humans.

 

Benchmark 4: Distinguish between low risk and high risk living styles.

A. Discover how different drugs affect a person's life.

B. Compare different diets and their effect on human life.

C. Develop ideas about sexual activity and diseases.

 

Benchmark 5: Explain where and how three life processes take place.

B. Summarize the process of photosynthesis.

C. Explain the functions of the parts of the reproductive system.

 

Benchmark 6: Determine the probability that an offspring will have certain characteristics.

A. Analyze punnet squares of mono and di hybrid crosses.

B. Discover how genetic diseases are transmitted.

 

Benchmark 7: Show the class how to perform basic life support.

Indicators:

A. Demonstrate CPR on a mannequin.

B. Practice opening an airway on other students.

C. show how to do CPR on an infant.
