Manning teachers have produced lots of innovative projects integrating technology into their curriculum. On this page we share with you some of our projects that we hope you might explore and try in your own classroom.

Tales of Mystery
http://www.manning.k12.ia.us/Elementary/teachers/
Drilling/mystery/mystery.html
Miss Drilling's 4th grade class designed their own collaborative Internet project. The students learned about the mystery genre and then wrote their own stories. Next they each created a webpage for their story. They invited other schools to participate and write their own stories as well.

Teacher Created Website Projects

Terrifically Tall Tales
http://www.manning.k12.ia.us/Elementary/teachers/talltales/

Mrs. Petersen's 3rd grade class studied tall tales and read lots of tall tale books. They then invited schools to read tall tales and submit an activity that they did while learning about tall tales. Some wrote their own stories while others created wanted posters.

Spring Paragraphs
http://www.manning.k12.ia.us/Elementary/teachers/Borkowski/spring/
spring02.htm
Mrs. Borkowski's 2nd grade class wrote paragraphs about spring. Next they drew pictures in Kidpix and then we placed these pictures on a webpage to share their published work with the rest of the world.

Rockin' Around the U.S.

"WANTED" Posters
http://www.manning.k12.ia.us/Elementary/teachers/talltales/participants/
wiederstein/wiederstein_tall_tales.htm
Mrs. Wiederstein's class designed "Wanted" Posters about a tall tale character using Kidpix. We then displayed them on the Internet to share.

mPower Presentations
Webquests

A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which some or all of the information that learners interact with comes from resources on the Internet, optionally supplemented with videoconferencing.

Bones and Muscles
Mrs. Petersen's 3rd grade class learned about our bones and muscles and then in pairs of two, the students created a slideshow answering some questions about the bones and muscles. Pictures were drawn in Kidpix and then inserted into mPower.

What Do I Want To Be When I Grow Up?
http://www.manning.k12.ia.us/Elementary/teachers/Kester/career.htm
A career webquest designed by Mrs. Kester to help students begin to think about what career path they'd like to take. Students research a career and then create a brochure about it. (Also listed on the Bernie Dodge webquest website.)

Sounds
Mrs. Petersen's 3rd grade class performed experiments to learn about sounds. The teacher took digital pictures of them performing the experiment and then the students put it into a short slideshow using mPower.

What's For Dinner? Webquest
http://www.manning.k12.ia.us/Elementary/teachers/DreyerK/

Travel Buddy Projects

Cruisin' To The Southeast
http://www.manning.k12.ia.us/Technology/southeast/index.html
Miss Andresen created a web-based unit for 4th grade students learning about the southeast region of the U.S. Students are tour guides who must have a good knowledge base about the southeast in order to attract more tourists. Students keep a journal of their findings, figure out the mileage to various spots in the southeast and place in a spreadsheet, create brochures about the states, and develop a slideshow to present to perspective clients.

Travel Dude
Mrs. Petersen's 3rd grade class sent "Travel Dude" a stuffed spider off into the world to make new friends. A website was maintained to share the information they collected. (We were awarded UNI's Showcase on Technology award.)

Simple Teacher Supported Website Projects

Southeast Traveling Buddies
Mr. Cast's social studies class wanted to learn first hand about the southeast region so they sent traveling buddies (stuffed animals) to schools in each of the southeast states. The class created a website to share what they learned with other students.

Not all websites have to be completed by the students, but students do love to be included in the process. If you go on a field trip or do a special project in your class, pull out a digital cameras and take pictures of each step. Then go back to the classroom and place the pictures on a webpage and then ask students to write captions for you. It's a great way to get them involved and to assess what they learned. Plus it's another audience for them to publish their work for.
